Pledging My Transparency | Being Transparent In A Blurry World

You deserve a politician who is transparent and not blurry. Going forward, I’ll publicly release my tax returns every year, because you deserve to see exactly how this job and the laws I vote upon will affect my own personal finances. That’s more than a vague range on the Public Disclosure Commission’s website. I’ll also push to amend chapter 29B.55 RCW, the law that sets what officials have to disclose, so every legislator has to show you more than a range, too. And I’m signing the WashCOG transparency Pledge (the Washington Coalition for Open Government, a nonprofit that fights for the public’s right to see government records), which means I’ll direct the House’s Public Records Officer not to invoke “Legislative Privilege” on my behalf. Right now, our lawmakers can use that Privilege to hide internal emails, texts, and documents from you. Only a handful of the state’s 147 legislators have signed the pledge, even though more than 80% of Washingtonians (who were polled) told a 2024 Crosscut/Elway poll that lawmakers shouldn’t get to use it. My opponent hasn’t signed, but I will, and now have.

Does this make me vulnerable? Yes! It is scary, and the people you elect should be scared. Our intentions shouldn’t be hidden.
